Ceramic and zirconia dental crowns - which is better for me?

  • Zirconium crowns.

  • All-ceramic crowns.

It is strictly individual and the clinician decides the best option for the respective tooth.

When teeth are severely damaged, they have large or several fillings that occupy most of the tooth, the restoration of aesthetics and chewing function is performed with dental crowns. Ceramic fused to metal crowns are strong and resistant to wear. The ratio of price and aesthetics is optimal for them. The problem with them is that the metal base, which is covered with ceramic, can give a grayish tint to the border with the gum. Another major disadvantage related to aesthetics is that ceramic fused to metal crowns are impermeable to light, so the tooth looks artificial.

Fully ceramic dental crowns – are preferred for restoration of front teeth due to their excellent aesthetics and maximum natural vision. They transmit light and so the teeth look vital. Porcelain crowns are made of IPS e.max ceramics in Dream dent dental clinic, which are fixed adhesively (with special glues).

Zirconium crowns – have very good aesthetics and strength. Zirconia crowns are applied throughout the dentition (in front and back teeth). They are of two types:

  • made entirely of zirconium dioxide (full contour) – usually for the restoration of masticatory teeth.
  • zirconium – ceramic dental crowns – they are made of zirconium cap on which a layer of ceramic is applied for even better aesthetics. We place such crowns in the aesthetic (visible) area of the dentition. Zirconia crowns are translucent to light and this determines their natural appearance. They are strong and small dental bridges can be made of zirconia.

– Porcelain veneers

– Bonding (light cured resin veneers)

In which cases are veneers suitable?

  • They can correct tooth discoloration
  • When the teeth are chipped
  • When they are distances between teeth
  • In need of slight adjustments in the arrangement of the teeth

What are porcelain veneers and what are their advantages?

They are thin porcelain coatings on the visible part (outer) of the front teeth in order to restore the lost shape and aesthetics. They are made in a dental laboratory from special ceramics, which guarantees excellent results.

What are the stages of making porcelain veneers?

  1. Planning and commenting on the desired shape, size and color of future restorations.
  2. Tooth preparation – it is removed from the teeth at minimum within the enamel.
  3. Taking impression of the teeth.
  4. Preparation and cementation of temporary veneers.
  5. Bonding of permanent porcelain veneers.

When are veneers not suitable for improving aesthetics?

  1. Parafunctions – bruxism (gritting of teeth) – in this case the treatment is carried out with dental crowns.
  2. Problem bite.
  3. Many broken teeth, dead teeth, with many fillings – it is recommended to make dental crowns.

What is bonding?

Bonding is an aesthetic restoration of teeth, in which with the help of high quality light curring resin and bonds (glues) the vision of the teeth is improved. Bonding can correct the shape of the teeth, close the distances between the teeth, erase irregularities on their surface, fluoride (white or yellow) stains, staining after root canal treatment.

What are the advantages of bonding?

  • Minimal filing.
  • Affordable price.
  • Performed in one office visit.
  • Easy repair in case of discoloration or breakage.

What are the disadvantages?

  • Less strength compared to porcelain veneers.
  • Change in color and luster over time.

What is whitening?

избелване на зъби

Before undertaking whitening, clinical oral hygiene must be performed – removal of tartar and plaque (cleaning and polishing). The procedure involves applying an oxygen-containing gel (hydrogen peroxide or urea peroxide) in various concentrations. To maintain the result, you can continue to apply whitening gel in special appliances at home under the supervision of the dentist.

Is it dangerous for teeth?

Whitening does not damage the teeth if it is performed under the supervision of a dentist. There must be no untreated caries. It is a contraindication if the patient abuses acidic beverages such as Coca-Cola.

Is the effect guaranteed?

The extent to which teeth will be affected by whitening depends on their original color – yellowish, grayish, antibiotic stains or fluoride. There is always an effect and it is evaluated with samples of different shades of white before and after the procedure. If there are single teeth with a darker color than the others (some dead teeth), they will not be affected by external whitening. Then endugenous whitening is applied – a gel is placed inside the tooth several times until the desired result is achieved. For long-term effect it is important to maintain excellent hygiene and limit the intake of food and beverages that can affect the color of teeth – coffee, cigarettes, red wine, blueberries and others. It is a good hygiene habit to rinse your mouth after eating such foods with water.
